In 1950 the director Pietro Germi began the shooting of his film "Path of Hope" (Il cammino della speranza). In Agrigento in Sicily he had met the composer Franco Li Causi and asked him to compose a soundtrack for his film. Any version of Li Causi wasn't approved by Pietro Germi, till he had heard the verses "Vitti 'na crozza" by unknown author, read by the miner Giuseppe Cibardo Bisaccia (during the shooting of film). Amazed by the folk poetry, Pietro Germi had asked Franco Li Causi to compose the music for it and exactly this song became the soundtrack for the film.
There are two versions of text.
Vitti 'na crozza supra 'nu cannuni
E cu 'sta crozza mi misi a parlari.
Idda m'arrispunniu cu 'n gran duluri:
"Iu morsi senza 'n toccu di campani".
Prestu passaru tutti li me' anni,
Passaru e si nni eru 'un sacciu unni.
Ora ca sù arrivatu ad uttant'anni,
Chiamu la crozza e nuddu m'arrispunni.
Chi n'aju a fari cchiù di la mè vita!?
Nun sugnu bonu cchiù pi travagghiari.
'Sta vita è fatta tutta di duluri
E d'accussì nun pozzu cchiù campari.
Cunzatimi cu ciuri lu mè lettu
Picchì a la fini già sugnu arriduttu.
Vinni lu tempu di lu mè rizzettu,
Lassu 'stu beddu munnu e lassu tuttu.

I saw a skull on a cannon
And with this skull I started to speak.
It replied me with great sorrow:
"I died without hearing a ringing of bells".
My years have gone away so fast,
They've gone away and I don't know where.
Now I have reached eighty years,
I call that skull but nobody answers me.
What else can I do in my life!?
I'm not able to working anymore.
This life is only made of sufferings
And this way I can't live anymore.
Adorn my bed with flowers,
Because I've come to the end of my life.
The time of my death has come,
I'm leaving this wonderful world and everything in it.
And with this skull I started to speak.
