Sicilian songs
E vui durmiti ancora
(And you are still sleeping)
Music by Gaetano Emanuel Calì,
Lyrics by Giovanni Formisano.
Pippo Rallo
(1928 - 2020)
sings

This Sicilian song was written in 1910.

The composer from Catania, Gaetano Emanuel Calì, read the verses of his countryman Giovanni Formisano before he left for Malta. While on a trip, Calì was so amazed by the verses that he composed the music immediately.

But the publication of the song was delayed for a long time, and it was only officially released in 1927.

Lu suli è già spuntatu 'ntra lu mari
E vui, bidduzza mia, durmiti ancora.
L'aceddi sunnu stanchi di cantari
E affriddateddi v'aspettanu ccà fora.
Supra 'stu barcuneddu sù pusati
E aspettanu quann'è ca v'affacciati.

Lassati stari, nun durmiti cchiui
Ca 'nmenzu ad iddi dintra 'sta vanedda
Ci sugnu puru iu c'aspettu a vui
Pi viriri 'sta faccia accussì bedda.
Passu ccà fora tutti li nuttati
E aspettu sulu quannu v'affacciati.

Li ciuri senza i vui nun vonnu stari;
Sù tutti cu li testi a pinnuluni.
Ognunu d'iddi nun voli sbucciari
Si prima nun si grapi 'stu barcuni.
Intra li buttuneddi sù ammucciati
E aspettanu quann'è ca v'affacciati.

Lassati stari, nun durmiti cchiui
Ca 'nmenzu ad iddi dintra 'sta vanedda
Ci sugnu puru iu c'aspettu a vui
Pi viriri 'sta faccia accussì bedda.
Passu ccà fora tutti li nuttati
E aspettu sulu quannu v'affacciati.

The sun has already risen over the sea
And you, my beauty, are still sleeping.
The birds are tired of singing,
And, frozen, they are waiting for you.
They are sitting above your balcony
And waiting for you to look out.

Wake up, don't sleep anymore,
In this alley, with the birds,
I'm waiting for you,
Longing to see your lovely face.
I spend all the nights here,
Waiting for you to look out.

Without you, the flowers don't want to grow;
They are almost wilted.
None of them wants to bloom
Until you open your balcony.
They are hiding their buds,
Waiting for you to look out.

Wake up, don't sleep anymore,
In this alley, with the birds,
I'm waiting for you,
Longing to see your lovely face.
I spend all the nights here,
Waiting for you to look out.
