Tenevo 'na paciona 'e 'nnammurata,
Affeziunata, semplice e gentile.
Doppo tre anne 'a capa ll'è avutata
E ll'è venuto 'o sfizio 'e mme lassà.
Stò contro a tutt' 'e ffemmene
Pe' chesta 'nfamità
E 'na vendetta nera voglio fà:

Mm'ho comprato 'nu mandulino
E mme metto for' 'o balcone.
Quanno passa 'na signurina
Io lle faccio 'n'accordo in "Fa".
Po' lle canto chistu sturnello
Ch'è capace d' 'a 'ntussecà:

Fli-ppò, Fli-ppò,
Fli-ppò, Fli-ppò,
Fiore di primavera!
La donna tiene i peli sopra il cuore
Ed io nun mm' 'a pigliasse pe' mugliera
Nemmeno se me l'ordina 'o duttore!
Parola mia,
Parola mia d'onore!

Diceva: "Tu sì tutt' 'o core mio
E si mme lasse teng' 'o vetriuolo!"
Po' mme guardava 'mmocca pe' gulio,
'A 'n'atu mese avevam' 'a spusà.
Nèh, chella 'o juorno quinnece
Mme dice chesto a me
E 'o sidece… nun se fa cchiù vedè.

E pe' chesto c' 'o mandulino
Io mme metto for' 'o balcone.
Quanno passano 'e ssignurine
Lle cumbino 'n'accordo in "Fa".
Po' lle canto chistu sturnello
Ch'è capace d' 'e 'ntussecà:

Fli-ppò, Fli-ppò,
Fli-ppò, Fli-ppò,
Fiore di primavera!
La donna dice: "Una capanna e un cuore"
Ma quanno vede 'e ccarte 'e mille lire
Se mette pure cu 'nu scupatore.
Parola mia,
Parola mia d'onore!

Succede ca mm'accatto 'nu giurnale
E trovo scritto: "Rosa Imperatore
Oggi si sposa… con il tal dei tali".
È chill' 'o juorno ca mm'aggi' 'a spassà.
Faccio 'na cosa semplice
Ca ll'ha da fà svenì.
Dice: "Ma che lle faje?"
Mo v' 'o dich'i'!

Mme ne jesco c' 'o mandulino
E mme metto sott' 'o purtone.
Quanno arrivano gli sposini,
Io lle faccio 'n'accordo in "Fa".
Po' lle canto chistu sturnello
Ch'è capace d' 'e ffà schiattà:

Fli-ppò, Fli-ppò,
Fli-ppò, Fli-ppò,
Fiore di primavera!
Chist'è 'nu matrimonio per amore,
Ma tu, mio caro sposo, sta' sicuro
C'a San Martino vaje a fà 'o priore!
Parola mia,
Parola mia d'onore!

I had a peaceful bride,
She was loving, simple and gentle.
Three years later her head was in a whirl
And it occurred to her that she left me.
Now I'm against all women
Because of this ignobility
And I want to revenge myself:

I have bought a mandolin
And I stand on the balcony.
When any girl passes by
I play for her the Fah chord.
Then I sing for her this couplet
To make her angry:

Fli-ppò, Fli-ppò,
Fli-ppò, Fli-ppò,
Flower of spring!
A woman has the heart covered by thorns
And I never get married to her
Even if a doctor prescribes it to me!
Word of honour,
I give my word of honour!

She was telling me: "You are my heart
And if you leave me I'll pour acid over your face!"
Then she was looking at me with loving eyes
All month when we were to be married.
Well, the fifteenth day
She's confirmed her accord
And the sixteenth day... I've not seen her anymore.

And therefore with the mandolin
I stand on the balcony.
When any girls pass by
I play for them the Fah chord.
Then I sing for them this couplet
To make them angry:

Fli-ppò, Fli-ppò,
Fli-ppò, Fli-ppò,
Flower of spring!
A woman says: "Two hearts and a hut"
But when she sees banknotes of a thousand lire
She's ready to follow even a dustman.
Word of honour,
I give my word of honour!

It happened so that I've bought a newspaper
And I've read a headline: "Rosa Imperatore
Gets married today... to Mister So-and-so".
It's the day to amuse myself.
I do a simple thing
That makes her lose consciousness.
She'll say: "What do you do?"
Now it's my time to say!

I'm come out with a mandolin
And I stand beside the gate.
When the newly wedded arrive
I'll play for them the Fah chord.
Then I'll sing for them this couplet
That will make them furious:

Fli-ppò, Fli-ppò,
Fli-ppò, Fli-ppò,
Flower of spring!
This is a marriage for love,
But you, dear husband, be sure
That you'll go to San Martino* to be a monk!
Word of honour,
I give my word of honour!
